As a small business owner you’re faced with making a lot of decisions. One of the questions you might ask yourself is “what platform do I build my website on?” Honestly, it can be confusing and overwhelming with so many different options out there! A few that might come to mind are Wix, SquareSpace and WordPress. Over the years we have honed in on one platform of choice that reigns supreme – WordPress. Let us tell you why.

Here are the 3 key reasons why we’ve made this choice and how you benefit from a website that’s built using WordPress. At the end we also explain why you might consider not using WordPress. Because what works for one business won’t necessarily work for everyone!

1. WordPress is an open-source web platform.

WordPress.org is a free, open-source content management system. So what does that even mean? Well,  when you sign up for your own hosting account WordPress is free to download, install, modify and upgrade. Because its open-source (meaning the original code is available for everyone) there are thousands of developers creating themes and plugins that allow you to extend the functionality of your site in some pretty cool ways without doing any custom development work yourself.

Using WordPress also means you have control over your own hosting account. In other words you own your website and have the freedom to move it around as you please. When you work with platforms that provide hosting (Squarespace, Wix) you are bound to use their service unless you re-build your website elsewhere using a different platform.

Key takeaway: WordPress gives you the most authority over your own website without needing to code it from scratch.

2. Anyone can use it, not just developers.

One of the key benefits to using WordPress is that it allows non-technical users to maintain their own website. You could even take it a step further and setup your own site from scratch but admittedly there can be a bit of a learning curve with this. We’ve spent a lot of years working with WordPress. We’ve been through the learning curve. We’ve tried countless themes, plugins and hosting providers. And we know exactly which tools to use to optimize your site from the get-go.

At the end of the day it’s your website and want to provide you a product that you can maintain after we hand it over to you. WordPress is easy to use, with a ton of guides and support available for you to take ownership once all the heavy-lifting and initial design work is done.

Key takeaway: Once all the hard work is done to design and develop your website, you can maintain the content yourself!

3. It’s customizable for future flexibility.

The sky really is the limit with WordPress. Because it’s open-source there are countless designers and developers regularly creating resources and plugins that can enhance your website. In fact there are entire organizations dedicated to maintaining high-quality products that can be used to do some pretty cool things. All without needing to do any expensive, custom development of your own! Online shops, membership sites, advanced calendars etc… anything you can dream up can be done with WordPress. We like to keep options open if there’s a chance that you will need to add something more dynamic to your website in the future.

Other platforms such as Wix and Squarespace are limited by the features already available, without room for custom development.

Key takeaway: Choose WordPress if you don’t want to limit your website for future functionality.

When would you choose something different?

We admit WordPress might not perfect or the right choice for everyone! Here are some reasons why you might decide to go a different route:

  • You simply don’t need anything more than a basic DIY website
  • You prefer not to have your own hosting account
  • You’re overwhelmed by the thousands of themes/plugins that are available for WordPress
